At The Expressive Lens, we've been taking expressive photography workshops with multiple themes likes emotions, memories and identity for a year now, through these workshops, we integrate photography and well-being through creative photography prompts.
Our workshop starts with an introduction, our participants come from varied professional backgrounds. It is always fun to interact with different people and talk about how they view photography and what they like to shoot. Once we go around the room, we dive into how this new genre of photography can help in emotional and mental well-being. We also take inspiration from artists that have created work that resonates with the theme of our workshop.
Once we get an understanding on how we can approach the theme and how can bring in symbolic and abstract elements into our photography to tell our story, we then move to creative photography prompts based on the theme of the workshop. Participants interact with the environment to observe frames and objects that help construct their story.
Once we go through the process of introspection and see how the photo prompt relates to each of us, we spend some time with how the prompt makes us feel, and then move onto how we can creatively show these feelings and thoughts visually.

We then share our photographs with the group and discuss what these photographs mean and how did the process of creating them make us feel. This is the main aspect of the workshop, at this point we are able to create an intersection between photography and our emotions. As each participant starts to share their photograph with their story, the group joins in with similar experiences creating a safe space.
